THE ROLE OF SOIL ORGANIC MATTER IN ACCUMULATION PROCESSES OF PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS (POPs) IN SOILS

Abstract
Organic matter (OM) is the main component of soil, which affects transforma- tion processes of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The rate of these processes depends on soil and climatic factors and properties of compounds. Distribution of pollutants between solid and the liquid soil phases, sorption/desorption processes, sequestration, aging of pollutants and formation of bound residues, causes com- pounds with hydrophobic properties to be retained in soils. The aim of the study was to summarize the state of knowledge on the participation of organic matter in the accumulation of persistent organic pollutants in soils. The work includes definitions and characteristic of various organic matter fractions as regards the origin of organic materials and description of processes in the OM-POPs system. The detailed description of the role of humus, dissolved organic matter and black carbon in the accumulation of organic pollutants have been shown. The paper also described problems of environmental impacts arising from the accumulation of persistent organic pollutants in soils.
